כחובב היסטוריה בכלל והיסטוריה של ספורט מוטורי בפרט כמובן שחלק מהעניין זה גם ספרים וכן..אני תולעת ספרים , ביחוד בכל מה שקשור לספרים שקשורים למרוצי מכוניות .

ביוגראפיות של נהגים בעיקר אבל גם סיפורי תקופה או מסלולים ישנים עושים לי את זה יותר מעניין.

במסגרת השבועית של ה"פינה של נייג'ל" - Nigel Roebuck כמובן שבה שואלים אותו קוראים שאלות והוא עונה היה לפני זמן מה מאמר בנושא הספרים "הכי, טובים שהוא ממליץ .

אצלי אישית הספרים הפייבוריטים הם אלו שקשורים באיירטון סנה ויש לי מספר ספרים עליו .

בשנתיים-שלוש האחרונות אני בעיקר בתחום של שנות ה-30 , בגלל התזה שלי בהיסטוריה .

אז הנה מה שיש למאסטר להגיד בעניין -

For most racing fanatics, there's a small core of 'must have' books on the sport, but of course everyone's choice is very personal, and depends on enthusiasm for the writer's work, and his choice of subject.

 

Having collected racing books since I was eight years old, I now have more than 1500. By no means all are great - or even good - but some are indeed memorable, and I'll pick out a few.

 

Having been brought up on the writings of Denis Jenkinson, I would have to have 'The Racing Driver', and also 'A Story Of Formula 1. Being a great admirer of Doug Nye's unequalled knowledge of the history of motor racing, I would have 'BRM' (two volumes, with a third due some time soon), for its wealth of detail and anecdote.

 

What else? Certainly I would choose 'For The Record,' by Niki Lauda, because it's probably the most honest racing driver's autobiography, and truly reflects the man and his sublime irreverence. Undoubtedly, I would include 'All But My Life', by Stirling Moss and Ken Purdy, which changed the way motor racing biography was written.

 

I'd have 'It Beats Working', by Eoin Young, because it's funny, and reads in part like a diary of my own professional life, and also 'The Chequered Year', by Ted Simon, a brilliant warts-and-all dissection of a Grand Prix season (1970) by a man who was leaving the sport, and knew he wouldn't have to face anyone afterwards...

 

Given my passion for American racing in the '50s and '60s, I would also need 'Fabulous Fifties - American Championship Racing', by Dick Wallen, a labour of love if ever I saw one; and 'Standing On The Gas', by Joe Scalzo, which deals with the great days of sprint car racing.

 

Many of these are from days gone by, however, and most will probably be out of print, and difficult to find. This year I much enjoyed Ed McDonough's book on the fabled Marquis de Portago, one of the most fascinating characters ever to drive a racing car, and also 'Grand Prix', by Quentin Spurring, which contains a huge number of previously unpublished photographs from the sport's history.

 

Without a doubt, though, for me the book of the year has been 'The Lost Generation', by my colleague David Tremayne. Why that title? Because in the mid-'70s three young British drivers - Roger Williamson, Tony Brise, Tom Pryce - all lost their lives, and each was a potential World Champion. Williamson and Pryce were killed in Grands Prix (at Zandvoort in 1973, and Kyalami in 1977, respectively), and Brise died in a light aircraft accident in 1975, along with his team owner Graham Hill, and other members of the team.

 

Because their lives ended tragically early, their full potential was unrealised, and each died without winning a Grand Prix. But anyone who was around at that time, and saw them in action had no doubt of their talent, which was from the top drawer.

 

Tremayne has produced a wonderful book, beautifully written, and exhaustively researched. I'd recommend it to you, Craig, and to anyone

else who loves Formula One, and its history.

יש לי ספר מקורי שקיבלתי מיהודי זקן בפריז על גרנד פרי מונקו 1934 מדהים

אותו יהודי היה ממקימי המסלול ב"מולרי" צרפת ובערוב ימיו עלה לישראל

כמו כן קיבלתי עוד ספר על הגרדפרי העולמי 1964 אתה מוזמן לבוא ולצלם
