My weekend at the race tracks... 2 of them

Following the same type of thread that I poseted last time -

!And what a weekend this was

 

It started off with a cold start.... really cold start, nearly freezing.. Sport Compact Car magazine had rented the track at Streets of Willow on friday for the purpose of having all their project cars running time trial against each other

Now, SCC does have a project miata, a 95 which happens to have a turbo which is very similar to mine

, and what can possibly be better than having the actual owner of that car as a member of my club and a good friend of mine... so again, I was invited to drive the car for magazine shootout

 

?Now, that cold start I was talking about

!Not only that it was freezing cold, it was raining extremely hard

!And what can possibly be any "better" than a turbo miata in the rain on a racetrack? having the car running SLICKS

- Let's go over it again

Miata - very short wheelbase RWD car with no ABS

Turbo - makes great power

Rain - makes it almost impossible to drive a turbo miata fast

Slicks - if there was any chance of getting the car to go slightly fast. they are gone

?Sounds like the perfect recipe for fun, no

 

And out on my way I go, it's about 4-5 degrees outside, raining hard to the point that there are standing water all over the track and big puddles and I need to go very fast in a turbo miata Lol .... by the third lap I already spun out twice and had mud all over the car from running off the track twice, the car will not accelerate going straight, not brake going straight and sure as hell doesn't do what I ask from it in the turns...did I have fun? hell yeah! after 6 laps or so I decide to come off and wait for the rain to stop for a little bit - I just can't see where I'm going and it is pretty scary out there... I find myself going into a corner sliding completely sideways at about 155 Kmh which have been great for the magazine photographers but got me pretty scared for my life too haha, I give up and drive it back to the pits

 

The other cars and drivers and coming on and off too, one at the time... it's really scary out there and the only car that seemed to do good was the project Evo MR which can be driven sideways in the rain all day long, one by one they all go - STI, Supercharged Nissan 350Z, Scion TC, Acura TSX, Datsun 510 Rally car, Silvia S13, Nissan Sentra, Dodge SRT-4... the 600HP Nissan 300ZX could not be driven in the rain at all so they gave up

 

I'm not sure about the final results but I think the miata came somewhere in the middle which was good enough for me and for the owner, especially considering the fact that we were the only ones on slicks and the track was completely wet

 

So, instead of going home at the end of the day, me and my friend got ourselves and place to catch some sleep in a motel next to thetrack, this was just not enough for us! we wanted more

 

The next day one of the clubs that I'm instructing for came to Willow springs - not the streets of willow which is the smaller track in the complex - the big willow springs wich is the fastest racetrack in the west side of the US, and my god, it is damn fast and the conditions are much better - bright and sunny, the track was completely dry by the end of the first hour and the tempertures were up to about 15 degrees

 

?How fast is damn fast

Let's take for example the students' cars that I drove today beside of my friend's Turbo miata on the slicks which were awesome today

My first two students drove NSX's, the next one was driving a miata with a V8 Mustang motor in it and the last one drove a Corvette C5 Z06

I the Z06, driving it really easy I made it to about 230Kmh at the end of the straightway, with the NSX I got to about 210 Kmh going into turn 8, and that is my friends, scary fast when the all the cars are on street tires

גלגלים חלקים ללא חריצים בכלל, נהדרים במסלולים יבשים, מחורבנים במסלולים רטובים כי אין חריצים לנקז את המים.

News break - my friend who drove his Evo 8 full racecar stayed for sunday too while I went home on saturday night, I just found these pix of his Evo from Sunday

Still haven't talked to him... he's standing there by the car so he's probably okay, the car does have a rollcage and full safety equipmentand it seems like the rollcage held up just fine

 

...One less Evo around

There are some insurance companies that may cover the damage in case it is a driver's education event (track day), but a lot of companies will not cover the damage

 

In general we tend to look at it as if you take your car to the track you are responsible to your damage only to your car and no one else is, even if someone hit your car it is your own resposibility and your own loss, same if you hit someone's car, that's his problem and not yours

.If you're not ready to face damage just don't take your car to the track, simple and cruel but that's the way it is

Second pic, I'm standing there (grey shirt) with one of my students between the two NSXs I was driving, discussing the corners

 

Third pic, I'm driving that black Corvette Z06 there chasing the red S2000, shitty pic, I know, but it's the only one that came out not blurry... the photographer has been punished

 

Fourth pic, the car that kicked everyone's ass almost - Stohr racecar (CSR)... there was an ALMS Viper between us too, he was the fastest

Hmmm, you need to update your knowledge about the Vette... the one I drive here in the pic is a C5 Z06... 405HP, handles almost a full G on the skidpad from the factory on street tires... it might not have the sharper feeling of the S2000 but it's faster by all means, straightways, corners, pretty much everywhere

 

Toyota are sponsoring a lot of things in this specific race track including the racing school that the track operates which has a fleet of race prepared Celicas

 

The track has a few shops like a tire shop, gift shop, a fast food restaurant, a gas station that sells race gas... the main income is obviously from renting track time, the track is in use every weekend and in many weekdays too

 

!I wouldn't count on trial for race tires... you can waste a brand new set in a day

מוטי, המיתלה האחורי בקורבט עדיין מבוסס על קפיצי עלים ?

דרך אגב יש יתרון לנהיגה בגשם : שחיקת הצמיגים אפסית , חסכון משמעותי.

Common mistake, it is not a normal longiditual leaf springs set-up but a transverse leaf spring that has some benefits over a normal sway bar
