Ok kids - now it's one of the old guys. I type much faster in English, and for a very simple reason - when I started working on computers in the late 70's, there were hardly any Hebrew keyboards and Hebrew SW's... The first PC I worked on was called "PC-G", which was a PC without hard-disk. You only had two 700kb diskette drivers. The 1st was for the DOS system (or "command com" as we called it), and the 2nd was for the application. The screen was of course the ugly green monochrome one. It was still better than the older stuff I used in high school, in which we programmed by punched cards. So, inevitably, one had to develop expertise in English typing. Only some years later, the famous "Einstein" & "Alef-Bet" word processors came, and the holy language became more commonly used in the cyber world.

i started on an apple 2c. it boasted 128K RAM when IBMs merely had 64.

it had no HD, a 10" CRT green screen and was a real cool machine!

my internet days began at the early nineties on a VT100 terminal which i grew to hate fiercely. back in those days there were no HTTP pages or graphics of any sort.

only IRC or DCC chats, gopher etc. pretty poor, but great fun. lost a lot of sleep hours on it.

The whole thing started when a friend at work saw I am typing pretty fast and asked me if I know how many characters per minute I can type. I said that last time I checked (using ktouch) it was around 400cpm.

He said that a guy he knows can type a to z in 2 seconds, and that they had an app that actually counts the time (starts counting as soon as you start, stops when you make a mistake and give you the time when you finish) - anyway, I said that it's impossible, 2 seconds seemed impossible, I said that 5 seconds is more reasonable until I tried it myself, 4 seconds at the beginning and then slowly started doing it faster and faster until today I broke the 2 seconds barrier.

A more acceptable "proof" will be given at sunday, more info in PM

well i just checked how fast i type and it turns out that in hebrew i do about 400cpm but in english i do about 300-330 and a mistake or two. i guess i can improve if i really put my mind to it. and actually i checked (with a stop watch) how fast i do the hebrew alpha-bet and it took only 4.5 seconds so i guess that about 2 is maybe possible...

בוודאי שזה מהרשת - חשבתי שזה ברור. פשוט הרגשתי נימה של פלצנות בשירשור הזה וחשתי צורך להגיב בהומור (אני מקווה שמשובח ).

 

לענין האנגלית בכלל, אין ספק שבתקופתנו בה האימפריה האמריקאית היא המעצמה היחידה, וכאשר גרמני וצרפתי רוצים לדבר הם עושים את זה באנגלית, ידיעה טובה של השפה היא הכרחית לכל מי שרוצה להתקדם בחיים.

כשאני הייתי ילד, התחילו ללמוד אנגלית בכיתה ה' ורוב הילדים התייחסו לזה בתור משהו זר ונלעג. כשהייתי בכיתה ב' ( 1968 ), חזרנו משהות בת שלוש שנים בלונדון. ידעתי לדבר עברית ככל צבר אבל פחות לכתוב, ובעיקר לא הכרתי את כל מה שילד ישראלי רגיל יודע בשלב זה - כלומר הייתי הסתום של הכיתה. אחרי כשבוע, המורה שאלה מי יודע איך אומרים את חודשי השנה באנגלית. דממה השתררה בכיתה. שאלה לגאונים. ליבי החסיר פעימה - אני יודע! הרמתי בהיסוס את היד (בפעם הראשונה) וכל הכיתה הסתכלה על המפגר שלא יודע כלום ורוצה לענות על השאלה הקשה.

"כן?" אמרה המורה

"January, February,March " התחלתי לענות בקול בוטח ובמבטא בריטי מושלם. כל הכיתה הסתכלה על המורה לראות אם המילים המוזרות נכונות.

"לא נכון" אמרה המורה לקול צחוקם של התלמידים "ינואר, פברואר, מרץ..."

 

מאז חלף הרבה זמן והמושגים שלנו השתנו. לילדתי הקטנה בת החמש יש שיעורי העשרה באנגלית בגן, והיא כבר מכירה את האותיות ויודעת מילים בסיסיות. הבנים הגדולים יותר שולטים באנגלית היטב, אותה למדו בין היתר מעיסוק אינטנסיבי במחשב שלא היה בילדותי. בני הבכור עמרי (בן 17 ) יודע אנגלית כמעט ברמה של שפת אם.

למרות חשיבותה של האנגלית, לא צריך לשכוח ששפתנו היא העברית, ואם אנחנו לא רוצים להתבולל תרבותית בכפר הגלובלי של קוקה קולה-מקדונלדס-סיינפלד, צריך לטפח אותה. אני שמח שמוטי קיבל מקלדת עברית, ואם הוא מדפיס בה לאט - זו ההזדמנות שלו להשתפר.

השרשור נפתח בתור בדיחה עצמית, אני ממש מתעב את העובדה שאני מקליד כ"כ לאט בעברית בגלל שמעולם לא הגעתי למצב שאני ממש כותב בעברית הודעות וכיוב'... לא היה לי מחשב עד גיל די מאוחר ולמעשה רוב השנים שאני משתמש במחשב עברו עלי פה בארה"ב... בשבילי האנגלית באה בתור שפה ראשונה כשזה מגיע למחשבים.

 

בכל אופן, אילו היו שישם שניות על למה פתחתי את השרשור, בחזרה לתכנית השידורים הרגילה ...

the 3.5", 720Kbyte DD/DS floppies were an expensive novelty used by crazy mac users...but those werent 720Kbyte anyway

my crazy english typing was developed by trading real life for 24 hrs/day of irc on #israel *smile* (and other fine irc channels)...of course once commercial isps came into existence ~94 *puke* (guess what...me and some friends almost had an isp of our own) irc was doomed (doom...doom II...) but my english typing is still much more developed than hebrew or russian...

of course my grammar sucks and i can't spell in any language anymore

but who cares...
