New member with questions on bringing cars to Israel

Hello everyone, thank you for all of your advice. I understand that Israel is not the ideal country to have a car hobby. I am very spoiled here in america, I am used to 450 hp cars and open freeways and dragstrips and race tracks and cheap car parts etc.... But that isn't the point, I have to do what I can with the place I intend to move. I have personal reasons why I am making aliyah so that is not soemthing I can change right now. I just want to make the best of it because cars is something very important to me. Funny how it was mentioned that mustangs and fords are hard to find yet in this forum there is a mustang club that started meeting up. I know it is hard to have a car hobby in israel, and maybe I cant ship the mustang. If that is the case, what is a good PLATFORM for modification if I plan on buying a used car in israel and modifying it for lots of horsepower.

 

For example, there are strange car makes in israel that I am no familiar with like Skoda, Renault and Citroen etc... I am not sure which cars in israel are the best platform for modification, if I indeed do not bring my mustang, I will modify a car that I buy in israel. Thank you

I dont understand. You say modifications are not legal in israel, but this forum has thousands of members that modify their cars. My car is very modified as you can see from the pictures, whats the difference if I ship a modified car into israel or buy a car there and modify it myself? I am getting mixed answers, thank you

We didn't say Mustangs are hard to find, but that Mustangs were not imported regularly There are several dozens of the last generation Mustang and a bit of the current model. There are also classic shape Mustangs that are at collectible status (more than 30 years old) and therefore are easier to source parts for, the customs regulations are somewhat more lenient for those. It's likely that your generation of Mustang is quite rare - if it exists here at all.

As was previously noted, I'm not sure you could bring it anyway.

 

Also note that any mechanical modification to cars is illegal in Israel. That's not to say it's not being done - there's a subsection here on Carsforum dealing with that - but it's still not allowed. The fact you see modified cars around just shows the sad state of affairs where being a car guy in Israel nearly universally means being a criminal.

It goes beyond engine tuning, you are not allowed to change tires to a different size than what was shipped with the car, and so on. If you are caught driving a modified car, your car will be towed to police storage and you will be summoned to court.

 

You will find that the VW group performance hatchbacks (Golf-like) are those most popular among tuners and easiest to source performance parts for. Skoda, Seat, Audi and VW are all under the same roof and nearly identical mechanically.

 

In any case, it would be worthwhile for you to import a car and not buy used in Israel.

You need to review the regulations about car importation for Oleh Chadash, to see the exact duty rates and restrictions. You might be prevented from selling the car for a set period of time, so consider it in your finances as well.

 

From an economic standpoint, if it's within your capability I think would be best to import one of the prestige brands (Audi/BMW/Mercedes) as those are sold for a premium in Israel, beyond the difference in prices abroad. Together with the reduced duty you will pay, it's my guess that you will retain the most of the car value compared to anything else. But run your own math.

 

Finally, if you do choose to import a car and not buy locally, I suggest that you look into modifying it before you bring it over. It makes sense from both taxation and legal perspectives.

 

If you give us your budget perhaps we try and estimate the various options you are facing, and help you with the import vs buy used dilemma.

Hello Roee, thank you very much for the valuable information you have provided. I am very sad to hear that such restrictions exist. I can't even get wider tires or rims for my car? That is absurd. I am used to modifying my cars all the time. What do you guys do to avoid being penalized? I can't live without car performance because it is part of my life and a passion of mine.

I dont really have a set budget, I just want to bring the mustang to Israel and work on it there and go to car club meetings and drive it around a little bit. I dont know what the problem is, what exactly is the government trying to accomplish with this? Every other country in the world has performance car enthusiasts with their own cars and projects, what can I do

 

If I did ship my mustang to israel successfully, how much would something like it sell for if I decide I can't keep it?

It may come as a surprised to you that all forms of motorsport were illegal in Israel up until very recently, and now became allowed under a draconian set of laws which makes them all but impractical. This is the way things are in regards to motoring and not much you can do about it.

 

Ultimately you do whatever you like, knowing that you are violating the law and if you have any sense then you just keep quiet about it. If your car looks and sounds stock then no police officer will hassle you. However there is an annual checkup called "test" in which your car is inspected and its emissions tested, if you go too big on modifications you might run into troubles of passing this test. Things like engine swapping are prohibited unless authorized in the car license and while permits are obtainable, it's nearly impossible if its a different engine than the one the car was manufactured with.

 

Anyway the bottom line is that things are difficult and strictly illegal but its being done anyway, so just familiarize yourself.

 

I don't know what your Mustang will be worth, for sure it'll be a rare car so there's no way of estimating it. I wouldn't bet on more than $20k at the very best but my opinion on this is completely worthless. Anyway I don't think you'll be able to sell the car for your first year or two here. If you work on the car yourself, make sure you'd have an appropriate place to do it in Israel - most everyone lives in apartments so you don't really have your own garage space. And there's the problem of importing parts I mentioned before, I think it'd prove to be the biggest hassle in this process.

 

It'll be more practical to get a newer car that's sold in Israel or go older and get something older on a collectible status but if you want your car then it's understandable.

Hello everyone, I understand hebrew and I can read it. But it is my second language and I prefer to type in english because it is easier for me to get my message across to you without sounding stupid. I really appreciate all of your help in this matter. I am very sad I will not be able to bring my cherished mustang with me to israel. I have work on this car a lot and it makes a lot of power and it does not look or sound stock. I bet I will be pulled over very quickly if I ever drove it. Aside from the fact that the front tires are skinny and rears are huge, made strictly for drag racing. They will wonder where do I go to drag race. I have been drag racing for 10 years and I dont know if there are any drag strips in israel. Does anyone know if a 1/4 mile drag strip exists in israel? Why not, , it will promote safe racing instead of street racing.
