Possible brake trouble in extremely cold conditions has sparked a recall of nearly 44,000 Toyota Yaris superminis in the UK.

Toyota in Finland found that braking efficiency could be lowered in temperatures below 20C. Ice could build up around the rear drum brake, causing fluid to leak from pipes and a reduction in braking power.

Brake efficiency is lowered by the potential fault but should preserve some stopping power thanks the cars dual-circuit design and low-fluid warning indicator.

A worldwide recall of 400,000 cars has been launched, including 43,600 in the UK. All Yaris models built between October 2000 and March 2002 are affected, although the T Sport is not. The recall includes the Yaris Verso.

Owners will be contacted in writing by Toyota, and will be given £10 of petrol, a car wash and vacuum and a free gift as compensation.
