אני די בטוח שלפחות פעם אחת במהלך מרוץ כזה או אחר, בטוח שבמהלך מרוץ פורמולה-1, חשבתם לעצמכם - האם רון דניס או פלביו בריאטורה נהגו במקלארן או ברנו על אמת.

האם הם לקחו את מכונית המרוץ שלהם סתם ככה לסיבוב בכדי להרגיש את מה שהנהגים מרגישים, הרי הם אוהבים בדיוק כמונו, בדיוק כמו הנהגים את הספורט הזה ואת מכוניות המרוץ, ונודה על האמת להם יש את האפשרות הזו.

הרי כמעט כל קבוצה לוקחת עיתונאי כזה או אחר ליום על המסלול ששיאו הוא מספר הקפות במפלצת .

First, we need to remember that Colin Chapman was an extremely good racing driver in his own right. As Bernie Ecclestone puts it, "He was as good as half the blokes who ever drove for him ..."

 

A slight exaggeration, perhaps, but Chapman was certainly a force to be reckoned with in a racing car. I remember a race at Oulton Park when I was a kid: for lap after lap Chapman raced Mike Hawthorn, both of them in identical Lotus 11 sports cars.

 

Chapman was no slouch, believe me. In 1956 he was nominated to drive a third Vanwall at the French Grand Prix, but was unable to start, his car being badly damaged during practice, when team-mate Hawthorn lost his brakes, and ran into the back of him. He gave up racing at the end of that year, to concentrate on running Lotus.

 

The great Mercedes engineer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, was another man well capable of doing justice to the racing cars he designed. In the mid-'50s, when Mercedes returned to racing, he would occasionally test a car at the Nurburgring, turning in times not far off those set by Fangio and Moss.

 

Today's team owners do not, though, seem to take a run in their own cars. I seem to remember Eddie Jordan doing it on one occasion, and in the early '80s both Frank Williams and Patrick Head had a go at the end of a day's winter testing. Once in a while a team owner has driven his own F1 car the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but not, so far as I'm aware, at a circuit. As you say, I don't know how they can resist ...
