  1. Genady, Congratulations for getting the test... I had a look at Alaa's comments from a couple of pages back, and of course, he is right (it's been some time since I worked on diesel engines:-)) - if the Cummins 400 has a water/oil cooler (which must be the case), and one of the oil pipes that run in a water passage (see picture below) has a hole in it, the result will be what you described, and in some cases this can be repaired for not too much money. Without seeing the type of white smoke you described, I can only say usually white smoke is either wrongly adjusted injection (not enough fuel) or what you see is not smoke, it's water from the cooling system getting into the combustion chambers and becoming steam, which from what we know so far would make sense. By the way, there are tester units garages have to check all this - maybe this is the best option pay someone to do the test. If it's an MH, they are worth saving because they are now strating to die in Israel, and because it's a plastic cab at least you don't have the problems of rust... Maybe worth it only if the owner wants very little for it, so you could use whatever you save to , get a good used 400 - if you need one in the future. But it's your money, so only you can decide, hahaha All the best T
  2. Well, there were 8X4 Scammells like these in Israel - they stopped bringing them because when DAF bought Leyland in the late 1980s they killed all the heavy Leyland/Scammell trucks (T45 and S26) - the wrecker in the pic was supposed to go to Israel but for some reason the order got cancelled, which probably saved its life, hahaha. I don't know if any are left in Israel with registration/test anymore... Freightliners I though there are still some working, so maybe you can get in touch with owners for the time they want to sell - they cannot be worth that much? Crazy ministry of transaport rules:cry: I remember this nonsense when I used to live in Israel... Congratulations for saving the Leylands, by the way. All the best, T PS: I saw a few entries back you were asking about KAMAZ - well, I remember there was one in Hadera in the the 1980s, it was owned by an oleh hadash who used it to do general transport. It was blue and don't ask me how he got parts for the engine at that time - now it's no problems, of course and you can get JaMZ bits for nothing in Russia:-) The pic is from Denisovets' site (with a pic of the better looking prototype also): http://denisovets.narod.ru/kamaz/kamazpages/kamaz5320.htm Main page: http://denisovets.narod.ru/models.html
  3. Genadi, just for interest's sake, what kind of a truck is the 400 of - cannot be that old (late 1980s? I don't think the Cummins 400 came out before that time)? Is this by any chance a Scammell (like in the pic - this one is a cancelled Israeli order, now in use by Heathrow airport) or is it a US made truck? Thanks, T
  4. Genadi the first question is, does it lose water? If it does, and you have water in the sump ("Karter"), the chances are this is internal, not external (some times you can get water in the sump if the weather is very humid, but it should not be much, or someone pressure washed the engine and left an oil filler cap open, or an external hosepipe is leaking straight into the sump, but I can't see how that's possible). If that's internal, it can be one of the next: (i) your head gasket (Packung rosh) is dead - this means head off, a bit of work, but not a disaster (can do in place, no need to take engine out. On a diesel with an iron head like the 400 the head should not be warped either (=$$)) (ii) you have a cracked block - this will be the killer, because you have to take the engine out, completely dismantle and do a pressure check to find out where it's coming from... And then the question is, can you weld the crack... $$$$$$$$$$$. Oh yes, if he tells you you can cure it with Bars Leaks or any such sealant, well, if it's a packung rosh, this is a bodge (camoflage, "iltur") and is a big gamble - even if it works for some time, so I would only do this as an emergency to get you home. Oil in the water sounds like packung problem to me Hope this helps, T
